- I run a support hotline for teens.
It's kinda odd, because I'm 'the adult'. No teen wants to open up to someone who's gonna tell them, "I know how this feels, you'll pull through."
I think most teens avoid talking to any type of adult for that reason exactly.
They never want to hear the excuses, "It's ok hun, I've been there too. This is how I coped, and this is how you should too." Nope. Pretty sure teens these days want to be able to vent and yell and scream without having an adult's opinion shoved down their throats.
Which is fine by me, because I'd rather just listen to some strange kid's drug induced rant. Especially if it keeps said kid alive for another week or so. All I have to do is hold the phone to my head and keep quiet, just long enough for them to get shit off their chests.
People —adults really— need to realize that these kids are our futures. So when we're old and wrinkly and barely able to wipe our own asses, it's gonna be these kids who decide if we should go on living or not. We should try to save these guys from committing suicide, not help them do it.
If we Americans are gonna preach about how we're the best damn country everywhere, then we need to fix our children.
Not with pills and therapy.
But just by being that silent shoulder they sometimes need.
